Under the HSE anti-slip guidelines, manufacturers and suppliers have a duty to ensure that products sold are safe and fit for purpose. Most commonly used in leisure centres, food production environments, kitchens and bathrooms; anti-slip tiles are vital in preventing injuries provoked by trips, slips and falls and therefore undergo stringent testing. The three main testing procedures are listed below:
The Pendulum Test
In simple terms, the pendulum slip test is designed to provide a definitive answer as to whether your chosen tile is fit for purpose, wet or dry. This technical procedure is designed to mimic the process of a foot slipping by swinging an imitation heal clad with standard soling rubber over a test surface. The higher the PTV (Pendulum Test Value) the higher the level of slip resistance. >> More Information on PTV values
If the pendulum test can be referred to as a technical process, the ramp test is most certainly the practical process when testing the slip of a tile. Tested both shod foot and barefoot, this process involves the subject wearing a fall restraint harness,who gradually increases the inclination of the ramp until he or she feels insecure or slips when walking up and down the slope. The angle at which slipping occurs is used to establish a classification ‘R’ value for the shod test and an A, B or C rating for the barefoot test. >> More Information on Ramp Test Classifications
A tile’s V rating determines the volume of water dispersal. It is predominantly a useful test for swimming pools and leisure centres. The V rating specifies a tile’s ability to transfer water. V0 is a low rating, with V10 being the highest. These tiles are appropriate for spaces requiring the specialised qualities of anti-slip and can be found in a wide range of colours, sizes and finishes.
