Mile End Park

Mile End Park Leisure centre, an award winning £15million development, masterminded by Roberts Limbrick Architects, is just one of the many leisure centres we are proud to have contributed to. Described as ‘a very complex building, both from spatial and technical considerations’, by David Anderson, Associate Director of Roberts Limbrick, Mile End Park Leisure Centre was an important project for Tower Hamlets, and the local area. Roberts Limbrick sought the very latest technology for this project, “Strata provided information and samples on the very latest ‘state of the art’ products – a really important aspect of the architect’s role in selecting and specifying products,” says David Anderson. Recognising the value of a self-cleaning tile, our Hydrotect coated range was specified for the swimming pools, and a number of other key locations.

A tile that cleans the air we breathe? Surely not! Hydrotect coating does just that. It not only removes bacteria and dirt without abrasive cleaning, it also purifies the air we breathe. It’s been proven – 1000sqm of Hydrotect tiles provides the equivalent oxygen levels as 70 deciduous trees. This innovative coating also provides a self cleaning effect. Formaldehyde, bacteria, germs and algae are all decomposed, and maintenance costs are greatly reduced. This innovative coating can also help maintain a comfortable room temperature. An innovation for the modern world and for Mile End Park Leisure Centre.

The walkways in the Mile End Park centre were tiled with one of our most popular collections, Technical Basalt. Roberts Limbrick were eager to specify a product that ‘ensured compliance with anti-slip regulations, but also provided ease of cleaning in use’ – Technical Basalt proved the perfect match. Technical Basalt is a rich portfolio of fully vitrified porcelain tiles available in a range of urban tones. These tiles are perfect for high traffic environments, having also been used at Topshop and Topman Oxford Street and many other exclusive projects. ‘Technical Basalt seems to appeal to everyone,’ says Trevor Horsley, former Director of Strata Tiles, ‘It can be used to make a statement or simply complement the surroundings.’

Kentish Town

Kentish Town Sports Centre presented Roberts Limbrick Associates and Strata Tiles with an entirely new type of challenge. A Grade 2 listed building, with the modern requirements of a bustling sports centre in our capital city, requires an especially thoroughly considered specification. The Grade II listed baths were due to be converted into flats as little as five years ago, and English Heritage have described the restoration as a ‘major triumph’.

Roberts Limbrick recognised the importance of a sympathetic restoration, with Associate Director David Anderson stating that they wished to ‘enhance the original heritage and characteristics’ of such a historic building. The Kentish Town project, comprised of three pools, a sports hall and an extensive gym suite, take inspiration from history, with modern technology that ensures the centre will be put to good use for many decades to come. Ian Dungavell, director of the Victorian Society, and at the forefront of the fight for the baths to be reopened, is pleased with the results of the restoration, “It shows you can put a 21st-century leisure centre in an Edwardian building,” says Dungavell.

Our Hydrotect coated range provided the perfect match for this project. With classic style and innovative properties, these self-cleaning, air-purifying tiles help preserve our surroundings. Beneath the glazed gothic roof, exposed for the first time since the 1960s, lies the main pool, a 33 metre, 5 lane pool that offers the local community a swimming bath that reflects their heritage. Hydrotect coated tiles provided the perfect fusion between the modern and the classic in this exciting project, Kentish Town.

Olympic Village, London

It isn’t everyday you get to stand at a location and get a sense of history in the making. A visit to the impressive Olympic Village construction site at Stratford was one of those locations that got the hairs on the back of the neck tingling. The vast construction area in East London was transformed to host the worlds leading athletes and ready to be televised to billions of people worldwide – history literally in the making.

Flanked by the iconic Canary Wharf Towers in the distance, and surrounded by additional construction sites of the Westfield Shopping Centre and Stratford International Train Station, Strata Tiles had every reason to feel very much apart of that iconic moment in our nations history, succeeding as we have to be supplying materials to some of these Olympic venues for 2012.

A site visit with Jonathan Wiles and an informative tour of the Athlete Village by Ardmore was an amazing opportunity to see our products installed, to hear of the issues experienced getting them onsite and seeing first hand fixers working with them, as well as hearing positive feedback from the guys on the ground made it a great experience.

Plymouth Life Centre

A leading centre for sporting excellence designed by Architects, Archial, who worked to create a building that would be a focus of community pride and a major landmark within the city. Plymouth Life Centre was built to house the only 10-lane, 50 metre competition pool, leisure pool and world class diving facility in the South West, a project funded by Plymouth council with an overall value of £46.5 million.

Archial was appointed as Lead Design Consultant to develop the concept in accordance with the brief. Archial’s extensive and detailed sports and leisure project experience was instrumental in winning and successfully detailing the scheme “We were extremely excited about working on such a prestigious high profile sports project,” says Director and Head of Archial’s Sport and Leisure Sector Chris Wood, “Plymouth Life Centre was one of the largest construction projects in the South West at the time, Strata Tiles were specified as we had worked together on previous projects. Strata’s assistance in the initial design phase proved very useful especially in providing samples, design and site installation advice.”

It was essential that Archial specified suitable tiles for the main pool, leisure pool, diving pool, reception, café, toilets and wet and dry change areas, not only providing a great look but also taking in to consideration adequate slip resistance and maintenance costs. Buchtal’s Hydrotect tiles Chroma II and Quantum were chosen for their great appearance and innovative easy cleaning and air purifying properties. The Hydrotect surface is created during the manufacturing process and creates a surface that allows water to freely move behind dirt. The revolutionary coating lasts the life of the tile and also protects against bacteria and purifies the air we breathe – 1000sqm of Hydrotect tiles provides the equivalent oxygen levels as 70 deciduous trees.

Archial was extremely pleased with the finished result, Chris Wood stated “The project was very challenging in coordinating all the various requirements, with a very high level of stakeholder consultation with the likes of the Team GB Diving coaches, British Swimming and British Octopush Association, but the finished project exceeds both our expectations and those of our client.”

Plymouth Life Centre is an official pre-Olympic Games training camp for the Canadian Diving Team, Lithuanian Swimming Teams as well as Ghana’s Olympic team.

Audi

With a rich history in the Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells area, Inchcape Audi have been delighting Audi customers since 1998 in the local area. Having previously enjoyed many years based in Tonbridge at the Brook Farm, Five Oak Green Road location, the new purpose-built centre in the heart of the Tunbridge Wells North Farm Industrial Estate area, opened in August 2014, providing an ideal location with easy access off the A21.

Strata Tiles worked closely with architects Taylor Design and contractors BDB Design and Build to create the appeal and functionality of the staircase that resides withinTunbridge Wells Audi. The step treads, manufactured by Strata Tiles, were created from a white quartz base composite stone (reference code: STSQ9022). Precision machined front edges and stainless steel anti-slip inserts were also executed to ensure an exacting standard.

Strata Tiles fabricated the step treads off-site allowing BDB Design and Build, who have worked with some of most respected names in the motor retail industry, to install the treads once the staircase frame had been installed. Once installed, the step treads linked the ground floor customer zones to the upstairs offices with a spectacular panoramic viewing gallery.

Next

Next is a traditional store with traditional values; Good quality and good prices reign supreme. But a modern world demands a modern store, and with this in mind, Dalziel and Pow were taken on to reinvigorate store identity in 2006.

“New stores feel more like department stores, rather than mono-brand fashion stores,” explain the Dalziel and Pow design team. “ Each department uses fundamentally the same merchandise system behind a customised, bespoke visual treatment.”

Strata Tiles have a flourishing relationship with Next and are proud to have been working with the popular high street retailer since 2006 to specify tiles which keep Next ahead of the trend. This most recent phase in the brands development has seen an array of mosaic implemented in different departments within various stores.

Ranging from stylish black and white designs in womenswear to a more fun and vibrant orange and gold mosaic pad within in the childrenswear department; a different mood has been created for each section through a choice of specially selected mosaic from Strata Tiles and partners AKDO. In addition, Strata Tiles has supplied Next with an array of emerging trends from porcelain wood to 3D mosaics.

Lush

The uber fragrant High Street store, LUSH, have opened their latest outlet at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol to celebrated fanfare and excitement. Not only was this their 100th store, but it was also their first ever Gold Rated SKA accredited premises for their use of eco materials that included strawboard walls, eco paint, eco-lighting and of course the Strata Tiles Versaflex flooring system.

LUSH were excited when we first showed them the Versaflex flooring system as it fitted so well in to their requirement of using products which had less impact on the environment – Versaflex fitted the brief for a multitude of reasons. Not only does Versaflex NOT use any damaging adhesive or grout, but as a dry flooring system, the tiles can be individually removed at any time, meaning LUSH could take the flooring with them should they choose to leave.

Convincing LUSH it was the right product was easy, it answered the brief perfectly. Proving this to the fit out contractors who had never seen it, or worked with it, was potentially a greater challenge. With 5 days allocated to laying the floor, all parties were extremely pleased when it was all completed within 24 hours, even allowing for time to level areas of the floor to ensure the correct environment for laying.

“The feedback to the Cribbs Causeway fit out has been outstanding, and a perfect display of the benefits of working with Versaflex” says Neil Lutterloch, Business Development Manager for Strata Tiles. “Being onsite to watch the floor go down, and more importantly, being able to see all of the other fit out contractors working on and around the new flooring as it was laid was impressive from a project perspective – there was literally NO downtime or delays while adhesives and grouts dried, it was immediate, very impressive and delivered the space ahead of schedule – and of course the finished result speak for themselves”.
