Gatwick Airport

Airport s are bustling, high traffic environments -buildings that never sleep. With an estimated 31.3 million passengers travelling through Gatwick Airport each year, with luggage, trolleys and children in tow, it is easy to see how important the right choice of flooring is. It needs to be incredibly durable, highly slip resistant and fit for purpose.

As one of the chosen suppliers for BAA, Strata Tiles provided Strata Dante and Strata Dino for the Gatwick Airport ITTS station and Pier Two. Now owned by GIP, we are proud to be involved with a number of upcoming high profile projects at the airport, including the South Terminal forecourt. There are a number of key aspects that have to be taken into account when specifying for an airport environment and we offer a talk on the complexities behind specifying for airports, a short extract of which follows below:

With a building designed for almost 24/7 heavy foot traffic, how do companies like Strata Tiles succeed in working with architects, developers and airport contractors to refit and install flooring within a busy terminal? In short, airports manage to accommodate an incredibly high level of construction in and around their working day, this is necessary in order to keep their buildings open and the passengers moving.

Bernard Weatherill House

The Bernard Weatherill House is located adjacent to the grade II listed Victorian Town Hall and forms a revitalised civic hub in the centre of Croydon.

Strata Tiles worked closely with architects EPR Architects and contractors Sir Robert McAlpine to create the tailored and functional reception areas, washrooms and galleries using the Dante range totalling 2000 sq m.

The Dante range, manufactured by Strata Tiles, are unglazed and the ultra-high firing temperatures and fine powders  have made for an unrivalled degree of compactness on the tile surfaces making them extremely durable. EPR Architects have a strict policy regarding selection of materials that meet their slip resistance criteria. The Dante range was selected on the basis that the material reached their required standard. The Bernard Weatherill House has now become a thriving and flourishing environment changing perceptions of traditional council offices, which has now obtained an award winning stature.

Bepton Spa

Sometimes a project comes along that has the ability to galvanise the rich creative talents of an architect and the benefits of Strata Tiles’ stunning product portfolio, to provide results that are truly inspiring to behold. For Strata Tiles, working on the Park House Hotel Bepton Spa project allowed us, and architects John Cooper Associates,a fantastic opportunity to supply a variety of materials, some personally selected from the quarries in Italy, and others handcrafted onsite, to create an environment of award winning potential.

The Bepton Spa project involved building a stunning cylindrical poolside shower made from solid Italian marble. Strata Tiles invited the client and architect to the quarry to personally choose the stone from the Italian hillside. This relationship between the client and the material they plucked from the earth allowed us the freedom to ensure nothing was wasted from the solid block of stone, as all off cuts were carved into the washroom surrounds.

To complement the shower areas, treatment rooms, reception and 500sqm of pool surround that was supplied, a beautiful hand laid mosaic whirl pool that shimmers with gold and deep earthen mosaic tiles. The beauty of the Park House Hotel Bepton Spa, and the best in materials and inspired design, leave a personal mark on this environment – it is certainly worth a visit.
